Yoga for Wellbeing: Balancing Vata Dosha

As winter comes to an end, the body is still attuned to an inward-focused rhythm, while cold and changeable conditions can make Vata qualities more pronounced. This may be experienced in the body as feeling cold, tension, restlessness, digestive gas or bloating; and in the mind as scattered attention, anxiety, and a sense of not being grounded.

This practice is designed to balance the rising Vata qualities during the transition from winter to spring, through a warming, centering structure that fosters a sense of safety in the nervous system. The flow unfolds without haste, guided by the breath. The intention is not to move faster, but to cultivate stability in the body and clarity in the mind.

The focus is on poses that support the hips, lower back, legs, and core, along with transitions that regulate the rhythm of the breath. Throughout the practice, continuity and a sense of direction are maintained, encouraging grounding and integration rather than Vata’s tendency toward dispersion.

Yoga for Wellbeing: Balancing Pitta Dosha

As spring approaches, energy gradually begins to mobilize and the inner pace may start to accelerate. When Pitta becomes dominant during this transition, it can show up as increased heat in the body, digestive sensitivity, tension in the head and neck; and in the mind as impatience, inner pressure, and difficulty relaxing even while resting.

This practice aims to balance Pitta without suppressing it, by dispersing excess heat as the body transitions into spring. The flow is structured to energize the body while softening and cooling the nervous system, avoiding unnecessary competition or strain. The tempo is steady but not demanding; the goal is not performance, but creating spaciousness in the body and ease in the mind.

Practices that open the chest, shoulder girdle, and abdominal area support freer breathing and help express Pitta’s intensity in a more balanced way.

Yoga for Wellbeing: Tridosha Balance

The beginning of spring is a time to release what has accumulated in the body, redistribute energy, and establish a new balance. During this period, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha may all be influential in different ways—one may create heaviness, another acceleration, while another brings inner pressure.

Rather than focusing on a single dosha, this practice aims to restore the body’s overall balance. The flow progresses with a quality that is energizing without being exhausting, calming without becoming stagnant. The intention is not to “do more,” but to find a rhythm aligned with the body’s actual needs.

Breath, movement, and transitions support circulation while creating space for nervous system regulation. The intended outcome is a state of balance that feels gathered without heaviness, enlivened without rushing, and more attuned to the dynamic energy of spring.
